Penglais Garden

About Us

We are a community of growers located near Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

The Penglais Community Garden is a ‘community garden’, managed by local people for general enjoyment and use. It began as a student initiative, supported by Aberystwyth University.

Our objective is to create a space for people to grow, to learn about growing food, planting in a wildlife friendly manner, and to provide a quiet space for people visiting the university and Arts Centre to just sit and enjoy their lunch!

It is run as something for anyone with an interest in gardening and growing from the Aberystwyth area to get involved with. We produce a bumper harvest each year which is shared between the volunteers.

We avoid use of chemicals and artificial fertilizers and work with Aberystwyth Conservation Volunteers to promote wildlife friendly gardening.

We will do this through

  • Developing and maintaining a wildlife friendly community garden on Penglais Campus.

  • Promoting inclusive social gardening activities for the community at large that help people to lead healthier lifestyles, and to grow as individuals and as members of society.

  • Providing opportunities for volunteer development.

  • Providing in partnership with other relevant organisations, opportunities for individuals to gain and enhance horticultural, gardening and outdoors skills.

  • Advancing the education of the general public in relation to grow-your-own and community gardening, horticulture, crafts, sustainable development and the protection and improvement of the natural environment through good environmental practices.

We meet as a group fairly regularly – most Wednesday’s late afternoon from mid-March until late-September, and at least one Saturday of the month over the winter period. Volunteers are always and very welcome.

Vegetables are harvested on a ‘get out what you put in’ basis—shared between the community of gardeners.

Excess harvest is sometimes passed on via an honesty box at the garden, and through the Aberystwyth Food Co op, and Aber Food Surplus.

Our aim is to assist our members in the recreational pursuit of gardening and horticulture and to promote well being, education and community cohesion.
