STATEMENT FROM PENGLAIS COMMUNITY GARDEN

Government advice (via Michael Gove) is currently that those with allotments, that CAN practice social distancing and comply with coronavirus rules, can use this as a form of exercise. That may change.

At the moment we do not know how or if Penglais Community Garden may be able to continue to function as a growing space for the community.

It may be that at some point in the future we can provide such a service. Given the length of time we may be living with this virus outbreak we will need to make sure anything we can do is organised in a responsible, safe and useful manner.

While we consider options and practical questions of risk and rules we would ask members of the public NOT TO VISIT the community garden or engage in activity on it without first notifying pgpstaff@aber.ac.uk.

It is certainly our intention to find a way of providing a safe outdoor growing space for physical and psychologically beneficial activity (we may need to consider timetabling and allotting beds and tools to individuals to oversee, for example).

Many of us also would also like to explore growing on seedlings that we could share with those who might be restricted to growing at home. But again, we need to consider the means and the safety issues associated with that.

Keeping our focus on risk and safety is a PARAMOUNT concern. So all of this requires a bit of thought.

Please bear with us while we put our thinking caps on.
